Shwe Shwe Poppis

Rosebank Sunday Market, Rosebank Mall, Baker St, Rosebank      +27 11 931 6229.     more than a year ago
Not a standalone store but a delightful creation, Shwe Shwe Poppis are colourful fantasy figures hand-sewn from drawings by kids at the African Children’s Feeding Scheme’s Malnutrition and Rehabilitation Creche in Zola, Soweto. Shwe Shwe is a geometrically patterned fabric that was incorporated into the traditional dress of Xhosa women after being imported by French missionaries and early European settlers in the 1840s to South Africa. The Shwe Shwe Poppis range includes dolls, bean bags, children’s aprons, key rings and other fun accessories. Available at Rosebank Sunday Market and Motherland Coffee Co in Dunkeld and Rosebank (www.motherlandcoffee.com).
