August marks Women’s Month in South Africa, a month where we pay tribute to the more than 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, in protest against the extension of Apartheid Pass Laws to women. Today, it is also a celebration of women’s achievements and a call to confront the ongoing challenges of gender inequality, violence, and erasure.

Against this backdrop, Latitudes Centre for the Arts presents its third annual Women’s Month exhibition, Skin, curated by Boitumelo Makousu and Denzo Nyathi, alongside showcases from two women-led production spaces, Stephens Tapestry Studio and Edition Verso.

Featuring artists Cinthia Sifa Mulanga, Farhana Jacobs, Mira Jaan, Lerato Ntili, and Kerri Liebovitz, Skin uses the body’s largest organ as both subject and metaphor, a living threshold between inner and outer worlds. The works explore how identity is shaped by both interior and exterior forces, reflecting on memory, rest as a radical act of reclamation, and the ongoing negotiation between subjecthood and objecthood in a world that is always watching.

In the spirit of Women’s Month, Skin invites visitors to engage with art as a site of reclamation, resilience, and transformation.
