Lamb, bifteki (spiced minced beef patties) or chicken souvlaki served with tzatziki, fresh tomatoes, red onion and rocket and wrapped up snugly in a freshly baked pita bread is still the star of the show here, although you can also create your own meze platter by mixing and matching from a selection of grilled halloumi, baked chill feta (highly recommended), tarama and tzatziki dips, chicken or lamb kebabs and salads.
The location for the pint-sized new Soul Souvlaki cafe is Shepherd Market, a quirky little courtyard just off Jan Smuts Avenue between the Hyde Park Corner shopping mall and the Colony centre. There are fewer than a dozen chairs (most of them outside) and the kitchen is as compact as their Maboneng container, making for an intimate and supremely casual lunch environment.
With easy and free parking this a great place to pick up a takeaway lunch on the go, or a platter for the office. You can also get your Soul Souvlaki from delivery companies such as Mr Delivery and Uber Eats.
