Performance artist Steven Cohen describes his often controversial, but always memorable, performances as a “digital painting of a social reality, half beautifully imagined, half horribly real”. These performances are especially distinctive for Cohen's elaborate appearance, which includes makeup, fantastical costumes and outsized additions to his person that have previously included a chandelier (used as a headpiece) and small coffins (which became part of stilts that the artist walked on).

In his latest exhibition, There’s glitter in my soup, Cohen presents a new series of intimately crafted self-portraits. Incorporating make-up, glitter, butterfly wings and Cohen’s own DNA, the portraits bear the memory of his previous performances, and the emotional toll that they take on the artist before, during and after.

As Cohen explains "Removing the make-up leaves me feeling pulled and slapped and plucked and stripped. After the ritual of de-facing my cosmetically enhanced performance self, I feel gently flayed and beyond fragile ... as naked as the bare bones of a depowdered butterfly wing. It is strange to make a work by unmaking one."
