Strauss & Co's July online auction includes an exciting collection of works by contemporary South Africa artists for a range of pockets, with estimated prices ranging from R5 000 to R50 000. Expect works from well-known names such as Jake Aikman, David Koloane ( who sadly passed away recently leaving an incredible legacy of art depicting Joburg), Maja Maljevic, Anton Kannemeyer, Norman Catherine, Lionel Smith, Sam Nhlengethwa (who has a must-see exhibition on currently at Wits Art Museum), and Deborah Bell. You'll find works on paper from Irma Stern, JH Pierneef and Maud Sumner and a number of editioned prints by Robert Hodgins, Cecil Skotnes and Walter Battiss. The online auction includes more than 400 art and decorative art pieces including a traditional Zulu pot by renowned ceramist Nesta Nala and glazed ceramic bowl by Andrew Walford.
While Strauss & Co's online auctions are an easy way to buy art from your armchair this auction coincides with the RMB Turbine Art Fair (TAF) which means that you will be able to view a selection of the works by sought after and lesser-known contemporary and twentieth century artists at the fair. The RMB Turbine Art Fair takes place from July 11– 14 at 10 Fricker Road in Illovo, having moved this year from its original Newtown location. Strauss & Co have also curated a museum-quality exhibition this year titled A Meeting of Minds: Louis Khehla Maqhubela and Douglas Portway. Curated by senior art specialist Wilhelm van Rensburg this is the first time that works of these two key south African artists have been brought together, assembled from private and museum collections.
The RMB Turbine Art Fair hosts a VIP opening on Thu, July 11, and is then open to the general public from July 12-14.
