As South Africa’s leading art auctioneers, Strauss & Co’s sales surface a wide-array of exceptional artworks with leading figures in South Africa’s art canon such as William Kentridge, Irma Stern and Gerard Sekoto often featuring.
For collectors the auction is not to be missed, but even for those who are not looking to bid, Strauss’ expert-led walkabouts offer the public a rare opportunity to see museum-grade works. The walkabouts at 11:00 on Sat, May 24 and Sun, May 25 have the added benefit of insights from the curators deepening the experience and engagement with the artworks.

Lady from the Orient leads the sale at an estimated R5–7 million. The work exemplifies Tretchikoff’s eastern influence and Hollywood glitz, and its moody and deep colours still mesmerise today. It stands among the most replicated and sought-after of Tretchikoff’s works, highlighting his ability to infuse glamour with cultural complexity.
All works for the auction will be on exhibition in Strauss & Co’s display for viewing from Mon, May 12. In conjunction with this Strauss & Co will exhibit a selection of works, including Lady from the Orient and Tretchikoff’s Springboks vs Wales, at the RMB Latitudes Art Fair from Fri, 23 May – Sun, 25 May.
