Essential viewing for anybody with an interest in architecture, cities and the ways that the urban environment affects our every day lives, this festival presents an exciting and thought-provoking collection of films that look at Africa's dynamic and multi-layered built environment, as well as the world's leading architects who are shaping it.<br /> <br /> Highlights of the extensive short and feature film programme include:<br /> <br /> <strong>​Paolo Soleri: Beyond Form</strong>; a cinéma vérité style documentary about 'the most interesting architect you’ve never heard of' (Thu June 23 at 20:00)<br /> <br /> <strong>Excuse Me While I Disappear</strong>; a short film about Kilamba Kiaxi, a new Chinese-built city outside Luanda, Angola (Fri June 24 at 16:00)<br /> <br /> <strong>Uncommon Sense: The Life and Architecture of Laurie Baker</strong>; A feature-length portrait of the reclusive British-born architect Laurie Baker, who shunned media exposure while quietly building over 3500 buildings using revolutionary low-cost, environmentally responsible techniques. (Fri June 24 at 18:00)<br /> <br /> <strong>Ecumenopolis: City Without Limits;</strong> a look at the causes and terrible effects of the lack of traditional principled planning and a neo-liberal approach that has put financial gain ahead of people’s needs, resulting in a mega-shantytown of 15 million. (Sat June 25 at 14:00)<br /> <br /> <strong>Makoko. Futures Afloat</strong> (29 mins) and <strong>Perween Rahman: The Rebel Optimist</strong> (60mins); A study of life in Makoko, the sprawling Lagos fishing community who live in floating homes, followed by an intimate portrait of Pakistani architect and urban planner, Perween Rahman, and her remarkable work for Karachi’s poor. (Sat June 25 at 16:00).<br /> <br /> <strong>AAFF2016 Architecture+Film Panel Discussion</strong>, starts at 18:00 on Sat June 25. Invited Directors include Mahera Omar, Aimee Madsen, Luis Urbano.<br /> <br /> <strong>Detropia; </strong>The story of the rise and fall of the city of Detroit and how the life of this once grand motor city has mirrored the story of the flowering of the American Dream and the later collapse of the American economy it was built on. (Sat June 25 at 20:00).<br /> <br /> <strong>Roger D’Astous; </strong> A feature-length documentary film about the life and work of Roger D’Astous, one of the most important Canadian architects of the twentieth century and a flamboyant rebel artist who was once beholden as a Canadian architecture superstar before he tragically fell into disgrace. (Sun June 26 at 14:00).<br /> <br /> <strong>The Block; </strong>From neighbourly disputes over garlic-heavy cooking to memories of Ceaușescu’s heatless winters, this 60 minute film explores the rich social and material universe of a Romanian apartment building. (Sun June 26 at 16:00 - preceded by 3 short films).
