Paying upwards of R100 for a hotdog raises eyebrows. The Filthy Moustache has been earning that reaction – and immediately disarming it – since rolling onto Joburg’s streets in 2016. Nearly a decade, multiple trucks, industry awards, a Durban outpost and a UK presence later, the brand has opened a fixed location at 9 Walters Street, steps away from Rosebank Quarter. It’s exactly as good as its reputation.
We’ve been fans for a while – catching the truck at markets like Prison Break in Lonehill. So when the Rosebank spot opened, a visit* was guaranteed.

How the The Filthy Moustache got started
Candice Nicolas and Jade Greef founded The Filthy Moustache at the age of 23, selling everything they owned to buy their first food truck – despite having no food industry experience and, by Candice’s admission, not knowing how to drive it. The name was dreamed up on a Friday night after a few drinks; who actually came up with it remains disputed.
The 2014 Jon Favreau film Chef, about a chef who starts a food truck, was an early creative touchstone. Their first hire quickly became a core part of the business, and together the three built what The Filthy Moustache is today through breakdowns, stress and plenty of laughter. From one truck, the brand has grown into a RASA Award-winning operation spanning seven food trucks, mobile bars, a DJ van, 10 pop-up stalls and locations across Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa and Oxfordshire in England.
Over the past decade, the Greefs have catered everything from intimate gatherings to large-scale festivals hosting over 3,000 guests, partnering with major brands like Doritos and delivering high-volume service without ever compromising on quality.
The Filthy Moustache's Rosebank menu: Hotdogs, burgers and more
The menu is named after moustache shapes. Every burger, every dog, every item carries the name of a different style.
Hotdogs are the heart of the operation. The New Guy – bacon, jalapeños, caramelised onions, feta – is the one to order on a first visit. Be warned: It might ruin all other hotdogs for you… even that chaotic Vienna-and-all-the-sauces masterpiece you’ve defended since primary school.
On the burger front, we tucked into The Bro-Stache Burger: a freshly baked roll stacked with a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, crispy bacon, sweet caramelised onions and enough sauce to make the whole thing gloriously messy.
Beyond the dogs, the buffalo wings and riblets are both worth your attention. The riblets are a hit with a proper sticky glaze, while the buffalo wings served a kick. There’s ranch or BBQ sauce on the side. It’s a short menu done very well, which is always preferable to a long one done carelessly.

Atmosphere at The Filthy Moustache, Rosebank
Seating is currently limited – the Walters Street spot is still working on it – but this is far from a dealbreaker. The location has become a prime lunch stop for Rosebank's working crowd, situated as it is within easy reach of several office buildings. And for something a little different: it makes a genuinely great car date. Or a great follow on to drinks at Le Vin Wine Bar nearby, a high-low combo that's sure to impress. The staff are sharp, warm and know what they’re talking about. If you’re in two minds about what to order, ask. Their recommendations are reliably good.
What's coming next
Expansion is firmly on the cards. Pretoria is next, driven by a loyal following in the area, with the Western Cape also in The Filthy Moustache’s sights. The sweet treats currently reserved for private and corporate catering are also being considered for the Rosebank menu.
