David Krut Projects gallery presents a follow-up exhibition that explores the creative process behind the making of William Kentridge's That which I do not remember, the fourth woodcut of five in his impressive series Triumphs and Laments. In early 2016 William Kentridge undertook one of his biggest ever projects – a 550 metre monumental frieze stencilled onto the walls overlooking the river Tiber in Rome. The drawings for the Triumphs and Laments frieze were created over a number of years before being stencilled onto the walls and comprise scenes from the cultural and political history of Rome.

With the help of long-time collaborator, master printer Jillian Ross of David Krut Workshop, Kentridge has turned some of his original drawings for the frieze into a series of large scale woodcut prints, now on rotating display at the David Krut Projects gallery on Jan Smuts. Each print begins life as multiple blocks of wood, prepared from a variety of woodgrains that are spliced together and carved (a full-time process that takes several weeks). The woodcut prints themselves are then created on several sheets of paper that, when assembled, fit together like the pieces of a puzzle.

Where all other images in Triumphs and Laments were either adapted from moments in Roman History, That which I do not remember is the only original image by Kentridge stencilled into the frieze in Rome.
