Please note that tickets for this show have now sold out!

Marking 50 years since the passing of one of South Africa's most celebrated writers, Can Themba, the Market Theatre presents The Suit, a play based on one of Themba's most famous short stories, directed by award-winning director James Ngcobo.

This moving tale focuses on the relationship between Philemon and Mathilda, a married couple living in Sophiatown in the years before the forced removals ordered by the Apartheid authorities. After catching his wife in bed with another man who flees the scene without his clothing, Philemon devises a particularly humiliating form of punishment for her. He insists that they treat the lover's discarded suit as a 'guest' in their home, a humiliation which has tragic consequences for the couple's marriage. A timeless piece of theatre.

Performances Tue-Sat at 20:15, Sun at 15:15.
