The Third Place

39 Gwigwi Mrwebi St, Newtown ,   City Centre         more than a year ago
Tucked away on a gritty cobbled backstreet on the edge of Newtown and with no signage, The Third Place is extremely easy to miss. Make your way to Newtown's graffiti-strewn Gwigwi Mrwebi Street, head towards the legendary events venue Carfax and you are almost there. To find your way into Newtown's newest underground club you then need to look out for the incongruous statues of a nude woman and a Virgin Mary tucked into an alcove and head through the door.

Once inside, a huge mural by artist NovaWolf welcomes you to the “City of Secrets” as the DJ churns out dance and drum-and-bass tunes from a huge DJ booth that dominates the monochrome sunken dancefloor. Hovering one floor above the dancefloor is a beach-style bar and chill-out area that comes complete with hanging plants, couches and foosball tables. From here a confetti-encrusted dressing room mirror and a doorway studded with five cent coins then leads you onwards to a neon-lit main bar that Andy Warhol would have adored, or you can opt to hang out on the outdoor patio and take a peek through the windows of the neighbouring artist studios.

A space for serious clubbers who like to dance long and hard, The Third Place also hosts Sunday afternoon parties and has plans to launch a cafe during the week.
