The Wilds is one of Joburg's most beautiful parks, a 40-acre park that creeps across a rocky koppie with the most wonderful city views that is filled with indigenous yellowwoods, blooming aloes and clivias and rolling green lawns that are perfect for a picnic. Until recently the park had a very fearsome reputation but has been miraculously revived by local artist James Delaney who has added new spaces of beauty with colourful sculptures and acted as the park's champion and a dedicated team of volunteers and Friends of The Wilds who visit every week to walk their dogs, pick some weeds and join in community organised events such as free nature talks or guided hikes for pensioners.
On September 1 celebrate the first day of spring at The Wilds. Look out for free talks on climate change from 09:30, a volunteer bench painting activation from 08:30 and make sure to try one of the refreshing homemade fruit sorbets from the Sobae stand.
