Semonkong is a remote region of Lesotho which sits high in the Drakensberg mountains. The area is largely inaccessible by car, and journeys between villages are usually undertaken by horse or on foot following mountain trails and paths. In May 2016, award-winning British photographer Thom Pierce travelled through the region with a local guide, following the 'commuter' trails that connect the villages and taking portraits of the herders, horsemen, traders and travellers he met along the way.

The portrait series The Horsemen of Semonkong is the striking result of Pierce's journey. The magnificent landscape, the distinctive Basotho blankets worn by the horsemen (and women) and the immense pride evident in their faces combine to create a majestic series of portraits that is a beautiful tribute to the traditional way of life in the remote villages of the so-called Mountain Kingdom.
