Ubu and the Truth Commission is an exciting theatrical collaboration between world famous artist William Kentridge and the Handspring Puppet Company (well known for their role in the production of the Broadway hit Warhorse). First performed in 1997, Ubu and the Truth Commission is a drama that revolves around a metaphorical tale of marital betrayal and notions of truth in the post-apartheid era. This production makes powerful use of animation, puppetry and documentary footage from the historical archive of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The story is told through the Ubu family. Pa Ubu spends a considerable amount of time away from home, particularly at night, prompting his wife to suspect that he is having an affair. In reality, the truth is much worse, as he is involved in a government death squad. Following the end of apartheid the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) is set in motion and amnesty is offered to those who come forward and offer their full, truthful testimony regarding their crimes. Ubu, however, suspects it is a trick and the play follows his actions as he considers what to do about his terrible secrets, the conflict with his family and the devastating effects of hidden truths and lies.
