Village Green Guest House's location is picture perfect, nestled in the heart of the quaint historic suburb of Parkview. The tree-lined high street is less than a 50-metre walk from here and you'll find a host of friendly cafes like Croft & Co, the gorgeous Art Africa gift shop and a sophisticated but down-to-earth bar and restaurant, the Art Deco-inspired Blind Tiger.

A grand old family home built in the 1920s, Village Green is a mixture of the old and the new having undergone major renovations in the 1940s, which expanded the space while retaining endearing vintage features that make so many of the properties in this area special. Oregon pine floors, elaborate pressed steel ceilings and elegant iron-framed windows are matched perfectly with family antiques and eye-catching paintings, while dotting many of the ornamental tables are the owner's homemade stained-glass tiffany lamps.

There's a choice of six rooms, each named for summer flowering plants that can be found in the guesthouse gardens, and all of them are more than spacious. Families will love the Hibiscus Suite which has two adjoining bedrooms (one with a twin and the other a double bed), while the expansive Rose Suite best shows off the building's historic features (there's also a fold-out couch ideal for accommodating children). The Bougainvillea Suite includes one of the original period fireplaces and opens out onto a private herb garden.

For those on a tighter budget the Jasmine Suite is slightly smaller without compromising on comfort and comes with added privacy, being slightly separate from the main house. All rooms come with their own private access to the guesthouse gardens and for those hot sunny days there's a swimming pool.

Inspired by a love of entertaining Village Green's owners, a husband-and-wife team, opened Village Green Guest House in 2009 after their children had flown the nest. While the Sloan children are now all grown up the guesthouse remains a child-friendly place with space to play in the private garden while parents take a well-deserved break.

Complimentary coffee and homemade biscuits are a signature welcoming gesture. Breakfast is served as a continental buffet with plenty of fresh fruits, juices and cereals or you can opt to kickstart the morning with the Full English.
