On Tue Nov 9 from 15:00, leading auction house Strauss & Co presents a virtual live auction, hosted online, dedicated to ceramic artworks by ceramist and mentor Hylton Nel and his late mentee Nico Masemola. Humbly describing himself as an 'artist-potter, according to Stevenson gallery Hylton Nel is "a master of combining whimsy with satire and making pointed, albeit often humorous, references to his personal concerns as well as those of the world at large". Nel's distinctive ceramics, which include plates, bowls, vases, plaques and figurative works, reference the decorative arts, literary and art historical sources and are also filled with imagery and messages drawn from the artist's daily observations.
As well as being a renowned ceramicist, Hylton Nel is also an influential mentor of a new generation of talent. One of his most talented former mentees was Nico Masemola, who sadly died in 2015. Works by Nico Masemola also feature in this sale.

Also on display at the gallery is a superb exhibition featuring hundreds of works, including masterpieces by the likes of Preller and Pierneef, that go on auction from Sun Nov 7 in Strauss & Co's auction week sales.
