Harare-born artist and sculptor Wallen Mapondera presents his first solo exhibition in Joburg and his second with SMAC Gallery. Meaning ‘Household of a Forsaken Land’, Mapondera’s Samusha Weiri Dongo takes the form of sculptural collages made from found debris such as cardboard, plastic-packaging materials and electrical wire.

Mapondera’s works gained renown for his use of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic imagery to confront the interplay of power and inequality in society. Deeply influenced by Zimbabwe’s long-standing political and economic crises, in Samusha Weiri Dongo Mapondera transforms the mundane into mythical forms and explores in particular the heated issues surrounding contemporary migration.
