Thoughtful, fascinating, and vulnerable. These are only a few words that sum up art gallery Everard Read Johannesburg's latest winter show, which includes more than 20 works by emerging and experienced artists. The exhibition includes sculptures, installations, and paintings, all of which address issues of belonging, the body, places, and the world. Three artists whose work is featured are Nandipha Mntambo, Sanell Aggenbach and Mark Rautenbach.

The Beloved lll, a work by  Mntambo, is a seemingly simple yet ambiguous painting with what looks like two bodies merging into one. Mntambo employs warm earthy tones in the artwork, creating a sense of familiarity while emphasizing the utilization of shapes, which makes the painting engaging.

Rautenbach's piece titled Black Moon Lilith l personifies a female creature in Jewish folklore called Lilith through the imagery of the moon that creates an alternate universe. The artwork is detailed and uniquely crafted using sewing thread, compact discs, safety pins and acrylic paint you get lost in its dark twisted beauty.

Future Proof: Dropping Prickly Pear, by Aggenbach resembles a spiky black cactus that lives true to its name. The artwork's unique shape carries a connecting concept, enticing you to investigate its subtleties.

An antidote to the mundane. If you frequently find yourself in a never-ending rat race through life, you can become entirely alienated from the world around you. This winter exhibition gives you a deeper insight into humanness and the significance of existence.
