Beloved Polish-Jewish writer, artist, critic and educator Bruno Schulz (1892-1942) was a rare master of two disciplines - literature and art, often using them in tandem to express himself with words and images. Although his output in both fields is limited, the richness of his art and prose, combined with its highly confessional nature, its tortured, yet dreamlike quality and the tragic circumstances of his death in the Drohobych Ghetto during WWII, have all made him an object of increasing fascination for scholars. This exhibit of several dozen drawings by Schulz seeks to undermine the stereotype of Schulz as a fetishist and masochist (if such one exists, as the curators seem to believe it does). During his lifetime Schulz produced many self-portraits, even hiding his own image among otherwise anonymous faces in crowds. Extracting and assembling all of these self-images in a sequence, the curators have attempted to reveal the artist's psyche in a way that provides new insights.
