Although the term 'realism' first appeared in the second half of the 19th century, the pursuit of accurating representing reality in art has existed thoughout art history. Even today, many consider 'good art' to be that which most faithfully accomplishes this. Artists, on the other hand, rarely have perfect realism as their sole priority or highest goal, but rather use the 'language of realism' to change our perception and convey their message. By altering realistic images - rearranging or deforming figures, softening or brutalising details, exagerrating or manipulating expressions, using artifical or unnatural colours, etc - artists can change the way we interpret reality, comment on the perceived rationale of existence, capture the political or cultural mood of an era, convey their dreams or illuminate hypocrisies. The works displayed in this long-running MOCAK exhibit are all part of the museum's permanent collection, and they do just that: employ realistic language to confront everything that matters in today’s world.
