The Crown Treasury in the historical heart of Poland at the Wawel Royal Castle is the true witness to the great history of the country. It includes jewellery, exquisite works in gold and silver, jewelry, textiles, and ornate parade arms and armor from the times of and gathered by different dynasties. The collection also includes many state insignia among them painted and embroidered banners, including the great court banner prepared for the royal wedding of King Sigismund II Augustus and Catherine of Austria in 1553. Another fine item is the mantle of the Order of the Holy Spirit, which was a gift from Louis XIV of France to Jan III Sobieski, the victor at the Battle of Vienna. But perhaps the creme de la creme of all the royal gadgets is the Szczerbiec – arguably the most important relic in Polish history. It had been used as the coronation sword from 1320 through the latest coronation in 1764.
