This exhibit focuses on the stories of those Cracovians who lived through and survived the Nazi German occupation and World War Two, those left the city during the war, and those who returned afterwards. In many cases their roads away from and back to Krakow lasted years or even generations, leading across several continents. The exhibition consists of six main parts divided thematically: civilian and military casualties, deportations to the East, the Katyn massacre, terror under German occupation, the extermination of Kraków's Jews, and forced labor for Germany. Each part of the exhibition presents various museum objects, supplemented by witnesses' accounts, photographs, documents and letters. The personal testimonies, in particular, are an extraordinary history lesson for today's visitors who, among the heroes of the story, may find their relatives or neighbours.
