U Muniaka

  ul. Floriańska 3 ,   Old Town          (+48) 530 69 05 29     more than a year ago

Find this famous - and famously unfriendly - jazz club at the bottom of a flight of stairs in a 14th-century cellar just seconds away from St. Mary’s Cathedral. Unchanged in years, though the names on stage may have fallen off the cutting edge and it's now mostly clogged with tourists, U Muniaka is still a no bullshit jazz venue: pay the no bullshit waitress (15-30zł depending on the night), take a seat and hear some no bullshit jazz music. The acoustics are great, the atmosphere intimate and attentive, and though you might be put off by the service, enthusiasts won't be disappointed by the music which begins nightly from 21:30.

Together with my two English visitors we were looking for a good jazz club on Saturday evening. There are many jazz clubs in Krakow so it is difficult to make a decision. We walked in to Jazz Club u Muniaka and we were "welcomed" by an older Polish lady who straight away shouted the price out for the entry, which was 20 PLN. I nicely asked why is it 20 and is it because of a any special gig going on. Then she RUDELY replied that it does not matter whether there is a gig going on or not it's always 20PLN. Then she moved away and commented on us in Polish, which I understood AND IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT NICE. I then said that we were about to pay the entry, however, her horrible comments about us were unacceptable. She kept on argueing and I only replied that with this kind of service the bar will deffinitely not go far especially that she scares all the foreigners away. I am appalled and disgusted how bad the service was. She sounded very racist towards us. Krakow is a lovely city and we do not expect such a bad service from someone like her. We will never go back there again!!!'

Very nice and typical bar of the center of Krakow it is situated in the underground and it is quite small but in a nice style. the entrance is 20zl and quite often it is the owner who plays the tables are right in front of the musicians and you can feel you are on the stage.

This venue is one for anybody genuinely interested in jazz. As a seasoned and fussy jazz tourist I rate it right up there with Small's! Consistently world class standard of musicians (who seem to be open to sharing their instruments with audience members every now and again; jamming from around a table in some murky alcove between sets....)
