Kawiarnia U Przyjaciół

  ul. Mielżyńskiego 27/29 ,   City Centre         05 May 2025
A true Poznań original, this cult literary cafe stuffed with theatrical portraits, yellowed books, original artwork and antique furnishings oozes old world charm. The spirits of Oscar Wilde, A. Conan Doyle, Witkacy and Bruno Schulz seem to inhabit each nook, and the drawers of the tables are literally stuffed with scribbled mementoes from previous visitors. As if the interiors weren't surprising enough, the courtyard garden is one of Poznań's best-kept secrets, featuring lots of lovely greenery, PL's oldest monument of Adam Mickiewicz, and at least one resident cat. The menu offers a wide range of coffees, teas, hot chocolates, seasonal summer refreshments and warming winter drinks, plus a few snacks and plenty of desserts. Despite seeming as if every intimate corner has been dusted by the absinthe fairy, they close early and the local crowd is more devoted to the atmosphere, coffee and cakes, than alcoholic imbibements.

Also home to a theatre, the cafe is located in the historic building of the Poznań Society of Friends of Learning - an important scientific and cultural organisation founded in 1857, which collected artworks, archaeological items and national mementoes during the Partitions, later founding Poznań University after the Wielkopolska Uprising. There's a lot of history in this courtyard (ask Mickiewicz), and a lot of charm.
