Roaming Office – Southern Sun Hyde Park

05 Oct 2023
Hugging and rising above the swanky Hyde Park Corner mall, situated within the heart of one of Johannesburg's most upmarket neighbourhoods, Southern Sun Hyde Park Hotel looks like a traditional business hotel but holds some lovely surprises. These include warm and heartfelt service, knockout views and a fun rooftop bar that is the perfect stop when business is done.

We recently took our Roaming Office to Southern Sun Hyde Park (September 2023), a day where the Johannesburg In Your Pocket team works from a hotel workspace and we get the opportunity to connect with hospitality partners and explore hotel properties.

Where we worked

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by the courteous valet parking attendants. As we stepped into the lobby area, our anticipation for the day ahead was set in motion by the soothing water feature to our right. Ascending the lift to the mezzanine level and down a long passage was where we found our designated workspace for the day – the Westminster boardroom. In addition to the Westminster, there are two other versatile boardrooms available, which together can accommodate up to 120 people comfortably.

Our breakfast was waiting. A vibrant platter of fresh fruit, buttery and perfectly flaky croissants and equally delicious mini-ciabatta toasts with avocado and swirls of salmon. We indulged in more than just a few. We were waited on hand and foot, coffee requests were promptly attended to and the results were excellent. Following our early breakfast, we were treated to a delightful array of brunch bites, featuring delectable cheese and tomato tramezzinis infused with basil pesto. The preview had us eagerly anticipating our upcoming lunch!

A wholesome culinary experience

The Southern Sun Hyde Park Hotel's restaurant, LUCÉ, favours Italian-style cuisine, but with plenty of local flourishes. For groups who are at the hotel for business, the thoughtful team have designed a family-style menu, so lunch is a seamless affair and there's no time wasted waiting for individual orders. Of course, all dietary requirements were asked for in advance. Our lunch on the day reminded us of a vibrant and comforting multi-course Sunday meal. Our culinary journey began with a refreshing Greek salad, generously adorned with creamy feta. This was followed by saucy, deboned chicken that was prepared to perfection and a generous platter of succulent beef, both paired perfectly with flavourful steamed spinach and fragrant basmati rice. However, it was the Napolitana gnocchi that stole the spotlight for us.

While we had other things in mind – people are always surprised that our Roaming Office is a real work day – sundowners and Champagne are clearly a must on the pool deck for the afternoon. The Island Bar is the place to be, beckoning you to unwind. With gorgeous views also on the menu, little convincing is required. The vistas across the leafy northern suburbs stretch out, and a lounger at the pool deck is the most coveted location to enjoy the sunset. We also heard there's an a la carte Champagne breakfast available at the Island Bar from 09:30 – 11:00 on the weekendds (we'll have to return for that!).

Traditional and comfortable accommodation

The Southern Sun Hyde Park Hotel is a great choice for a delightful stay in Sandton, whether for leisure or business, a romantic getaway or a quick city break. The hotel has 132 en-suite rooms and plenty of amenities to ensure comfort and convenience. These include plus-double beds, complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi, a stocked mini-bar, a flat-screen TV with DStv, 18-hour room service and more. The room options include 60 Standard and Superior rooms, six spacious Deluxe rooms, three Executive rooms and luxurious Suites. Additionally, the hotel offers smoking rooms and wheelchair-accessible rooms upon request. A commitment to comfort is highlighted with the inclusion of breakfast in the room rate. We loved the city-view rooms, although all offer a pleasing eyeful in any direction.

While there is no on-site spa, strategic proximity to Hyde Park Corner ensures that you have ample opportunities to explore the beauty and wellness offerings in the area. Amenities include a gym and the option to discover the city with the hotel's Gautrain station shuttle which transports guests to and from the Rosebank and Sandton Gautrain stations every day from 06:00 until 20:00.

Our time working at the Southern Sun Hyde Park Hotel was nothing short of exceptional – from the fresh and wholesome food to the attentive service. Located in a highly sought-after neighbourhood and with views that are a marvel, a visit here offers great rewards.
