This timely exhibition investigates the way that collage became an important strategy for modernist artists in the twentieth century – especially in Central and Eastern Europe, where it somehow became the artistic form that fitted most perfectly a context characterized by sudden rips in the historical fabric. There is some really fabulous stuff on show here, much of it unknown to the wider museum-going public, with Croatian classics of the cut-up genre Josip Seissel and Antun Motika displayed alongside contemporary masters of juxtaposition such as the Austrian Valie Export, Slovak Julius Koller, and Slovene art collective IRWIN.
