The American bison used to be the undisputed lord of the Plains and even today, the bison remains an unmistakable symbol of the Midwestern grasslands and its indigenous cultures. For thousands of years, bison roamed the Great Plains of North America. They formed the biggest animal herds ever to be found on the planet. Although nobody knows their exact number in their heyday, conservative estimates begin at 25 million animals. In 1790, gigantic bison herds still migrated over the Plains, but in the 19th century, the unimaginable happened. This majestic animal nearly completely disappeared. So what happened? In NONAM's new special exhibition, visitors embark on a search for traces of the American bison, right among the shortgrass and buffalo chips.
