Kraków has always been Poland's academic, cultural and artistic capital, dating back to the Middle Ages (the country's first university was founded here in 1364), through various periods of occupation (see Młoda Polska), to today, with its publishing houses, literary festivals and institutions earning acclaim from UNESCO. Through the centuries PL's best authors and poets have flocked here to find inspiration, discourse and community. In fact, when Czesław Miłosz made Kraków his home after the fall of communism, it became the world's only city with two living Nobel Prize winners. Below we highlight some of the writers most associated with PL's literary capital.
