Join Johannesburg In Your Pocket editor Laurice Taitz and the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation for a unique behind-the-scenes exploration of the studios and workshops of some of Joburg's most talented artisans.

In partnership with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, on Saturday June 8 In Your Pocket leads a special tour of Joburg's Maker's Valley, offering the chance to go behind-the-scenes at the studios of some of Joburg's most talented artisans and artists. Less a formal tour and more a series of encounters, this experience includes visits to three studios in the city where the practice of age-old techniques of craftsmanship are being reinvigorated by a new generation of artisans and artists.

Our tour starts at the Victoria Yards studio and workshop of award-winning wood furniture designer David Krynauw whose handcrafted designs utilise wood sourced from his family farm outside Piet Retief, a timber-growing region of Mpumalanga.

We'll then be paying a visit to Studio Lorenzi, a family-owned luxury handbag and accessories brand. Lorenzi is run by Ugo Caon, whose father Renzo settled in South Africa from Italy in the 1960s and established this luxurious brand, defined by its dedication to creativity and manufacturing excellence.

Our final stop is the David Krut Projects Workshop at Arts on Main in Maboneng – one of South Africa’s most accomplished printmaking workshops. Having worked with South Africa’s top artists, this year David Krut Projects' master printer Jillian Ross and her team will complete the final image in the series of William Kentridge’s monumental woodcut prints based on the frieze that Kentridge installed along the banks of Rome’s Tiber River in 2016, Triumphs and Laments.

The tour travels between the three destinations by bus and lasts approximately three hours. The bus tour starts and ends at the Sunnyside Park Hotel in Parktown where free parking is available.

Booking is essential. Book your tickets online here.
