L Ron Hubbard House Tour and Tea with Jacaranda Views

L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, lived in Johannesburg for six months in 1960 – 1961. The house he bought is a stunning example of 20th century modernist architecture originally designed by Frank L. Jarrett in 1951 for the Greek timber merchant, Manos Broulidakis.

Today, the house is still owned by the Scientologists who have lovingly restored the property to its original condition with an on-site museum that includes a fine collection of Hubbard-related artefacts. Boasting beautiful period fittings, wood detailing, terraced lawns and graceful proportions, mid-century modern doesn’t get much better than this.

Other than his hand in Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard authored a “one man, one vote” constitution for apartheid-shackled South Africa. Image supplied.

Magnificently sited on the Linksfield Ridge with a southern outlook, the home also offers uninterrupted views of the city with a blanket of blooming jacarandas below, the perfect spot for Johannesburg Heritage Foundation’s house tour on Oct 28.

The tour is conducted by Prof. Kathy Munro along with the curator of the home, Luc Dubois, who offers insights on the history of the suburb, the distinctive architecture of the home and the context of life here in 1960/61. Tea and refreshments are served on the Terrace or in the downstairs apartment (depending on the weather) and is included in the ticket price.

Need to know: this is a members-only tour and space is limited to 20 people, it’ best to book soon. The 2-hour house tour and tea starts at 14:00 at 40 Hannaben Street.
