Drinking Culture

11 Mar 2024

Make no mistake about it, Zagreb is a great city for anyone who enjoys a tipple or three. The city centre is packed with bars, pubs, clubs and cafes, from boutique spots to dive charmers and beyond. After all, it is five o’clock somewhere, right?

Wine and Friends Wine bar & Shop

Is there a better combination on the planet than wine and friends? Few things in life stir the soul like a good glass of wine with your favourite people, and this Zagreb wine bar combines the two with elegance and style. The range of bottles on offer is impressive, covering the entire spectrum of grapes, while the bar snacks and food are perfect accompaniments. You can even buy bottles to take home, although we recommend spending as much time here as possible. You have wine, you have friends, what more do you need?

diWine Bar

It shouldn’t be a shock to learn that we love the name. Puns are one of life’s treasures, after all, and the same can be said about good wine and good times. diWine is a delightful wine bar in the city centre, a place where lovers of wine can come together and enjoy the finer things in life, while the frequent events help add layers of education to all those flavours. diWine does its best to focus on smaller producers, giving a space for boutique wines and independent growers to showcase their efforts. Yes, it is divine.

Knebu Wine Store

Knebu really is a winery like no other. The headquarters are located across the border in Tomislavgrad (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and these wines are produced 900 metres above sea level, which is unique enough before taking into account the hands-on process and special barrels. If you can’t get to Tomislavgrad (you should; the monastery is delightful), the Knebu Wine Store in Zagreb is the next best place, a sophisticated and gorgeous wine shop in the heart of town with a great range on sale. There are also free tastings, allowing visitors to try before they buy. Trust us, you will buy.

Dežman Mini Bar

When one of Croatia’s greatest bartenders puts his weight behind a project, you should probably pay attention. Marino Karinja is the driving force behind the Dežman Mini Bar, which, as the name suggests, takes the quality and professionalism of the popular Dežman Bar and thrusts it through a small but perfectly formed funnel. The result? Expertly mixed cocktails and other drinks in an achingly gorgeous setting. Try any of the bar’s signature cocktails and get ready to fall in love.

Peaches and Cream Bar

Playful in all the right ways, Peaches and Cream Bar is fast becoming one of the most popular spots in Zagreb. The sophisticated yet homely bar is the brainchild of good friends who bring a wealth of professional experience to the game, allowing them to avoid the pitfalls that keep many other establishments decidedly average. Peaches and Cream is anything but average, with particular attention paid to everyone wise enough to pay them a visit. The cocktails are spectacular (each has a story), and the non-alcoholic options are refreshingly varied. That should be the norm, but Peaches and Cream Bar is ahead of the game.

Bastion No. 19

Proudly wearing its hipster credentials on its sleeve, Bastion No. 19 is a bar focused on quality in all facets of its existence. That is what the hipster revolution should have been about, after all. Why drink shoddy industrial lager when so many beautiful craft options are available? Why accept mediocrity when magnificence is waiting for you? Magnificence is an apt word to describe Bastion No. 19, where a stylish minimalistic interior only accentuates the fabulous range of drinks on offer.
