One of the most influential philosophers of the 19th century, whose darker take on the human condition would go on to influence the writings of Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Tolstoy, Kafka, and more, Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860) was born to a wealthy merchant family in Gdańsk. The Schopenhauers resided at this address on ul. Świętego Ducha 45/47 in Gdańsk Old Town.
