It’s now easier to count the international brand names who are not present than those that are. So if your ambition is to shop until you drop while you are here we suggest the first place you look is at the list of hypermarkets and malls listed in our shopping section. While this is not a list of all, it is a selection of what we view as the best ones from each of the 3 cities. With Madison the most central in Gdansk's Old Town, Galeria Baltycka the most convenient large mall in Gdansk, and Designer Outlet Centre the city's largest discount outlet, you can sate most shopping desires there.
Sunday Shopping Ban
In March 2018 the government brought in new regulations designed to gradually phase out Sunday shopping in order, the government hopes, to encourage citizens to return to a more ‘traditional’ family Sunday. Phased in gradually, in 2018 the new regulations allowed large stores to open on only the first and last Sundays of each month, forcing shops to close on the intervening Sundays. Beginning in 2019, trade will only be allowed on the last Sunday of each month and a few other ‘special’ Sundays such as the week before Easter. While all major malls and chains will be closed there are some exemptions to the new law namely pharmacies, gas stations, kiosks, bakeries, open-air markets, souvenir shops (oh thank god) and smaller stores where the owner is present. Note that the Sunday hours we list for venues are the hours they keep only on those Sundays when trade is allowed. The following is a list of Sundays when shops are allowed to be open:
Dec. 2, 16, 23, 30
April 14, 28
December 15, 22, 29
