Czesław Podlesny's "Castaways" sculptures

30 Oct 2025
Hard to miss when roaming about the old dock basin of Gdańsk's Imperial Shipyard area, this ragtag mob of rusty metallic figures emerging from the waterway are Rozbitkowie (ENG: Castaways), created by sculptor Czesław Podleśny, a resident artist of the nearby WL4 Art Space.

When asked about his creations, Podleśny has stated:
"When my sculptures appear in public spaces, my commentary falls silent: the viewer and the sculpture have more to say to each other than my narrative would. They are faced with many questions to which they must find their own answers, but in doing so, they discover layers of emotion that I had missed by focusing on form and message."

This series of works was created between 2017 and 2019, and are a permanent fixture of the shipyard's landscape. Aside this group of sculptures, there many more castaways can be found in the vicinity!
