From December 3, 2023, to May 16, 2024, Gdańsk's Main Town Hall hosts the artistic legacy of Olga Boznańska, a prominent Polish painter from the late 19th and early 20th century. The artist was born in Krakow in 1865, and later trained in Munich before settling in Paris in 1898. From the collection of Krakow's National Museum, these 50 artworks showcase the artist's diverse portrait collection from the full length of her career. Her self-portraiture convey profound emotions, while depictions of her inner circle and others that capture the likeness of various children offer intimate insights. Alongside these, a selection of Boznanska's foray into still lifes, floral compositions, interiors, and landscapes viewed through the artist's studio window, show her nuanced and audacious use of color. Additionally, the exhibition presents relics from the artist's studio—palettes, brushes, and wet paint tubes—providing a tactile connection to her artistic process. Today, Olga Boznańska remains an example of a unique creative who was active in parallel to French impressionism, though refused to be labeled as such by the critics!
