Between the Upland and Golden gates is a 16th-century complex that functioned as a torture chamber and courthouse (the smaller building) and a prison (the tower). It's alleged that flooding the underground cell (see the grate behind the door) was a common torture method used and prisoners had to bail themselves out to survive! Once the home of the city's Amber Museum, now at the Great Mill to the north, the foregate is now a branch of the Museum of Gdańsk where exhibitions are hosted.
