Vacancy: Full-time writing internship at Johannesburg In Your Pocket (12 months*, paid)

Start: March 2026
*Candidate will be required to spend two unpaid days on a trial basis. A travel stipend will be provided.

Johannesburg in Your Pocket has an opening for a writing and content intern for a paid, 12-month contract. We are looking for a skilled graduate (journalism, English, literature or similar) who is news savvy, with an interest in lifestyle trends and urban dynamics, to join our small but mighty content team. 

This job is full time and Joburg based. You must be centrally located and have your own reliable transport, a laptop, a smartphone, and uninterrupted internet access. Travel is required to and from our Rosebank offices and to attend events.

1) Responsibilities
As a writing and content intern, you’ll contribute across Johannesburg In Your Pocket’s website, newsletter, and social platforms. As part of your role, you will be expected to: 
– Write website features and create social content around events, news, places, and cultural trends, as well as key Joburg people and neighbourhoods. 
– Pitch stories that illustrate a keen interest in the goings-on of the city, and come up with interesting angles for coverage. 
– Capture the city. Attend local events and experiences to take photos, create Reels, and report back on. 
– Represent Johannesburg In Your Pocket professionally and in line with our brand.
– Compile regular event and venue listings.
– Monitor social networks for relevant content leads.
– Social media scheduling. Draft posts, source strong visuals, and contribute ideas to boost engagement across Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. 
– Design know-how in Canva is a plus!

– Excellent writing and research skills.
– Deadline driven.
– Strong communication skills. 
– An interest in culture – from music to nightlife, performance to tourism experiences. You must be ready to experience these and write about them.
– People think of you as an organised person.
– Great at being on time. 
– Be a team player.
– Demonstrated use of social media platforms.
– Enjoy creating content. 
– Basic photography skills.
– A media studies, journalism, English, literature, or related tertiary degree.
– Previous writing experience, whether through internships, student publications, freelance work, or personal projects.
– Must be open to attending events (including on weekends). 
– Must be mobile and able to travel around the city.
– Ability to research and fact-check quickly and accurately.
– Comfortable using digital tools. 

The internship is based in Rosebank, Johannesburg. This is a hybrid working arrangement with office days and work-from-home days. The candidate must have a laptop, smartphone, and access to internet connectivity at home. 

This is a paid, 12-month* internship.
