Bridge Books is a friendly independent bookshop owned by the pioneering Griffin Shea. Bridge Books sells new and secondhand books, with a focus on works by South African and African writers and poets.

The store also offers an amazing selection of children's books in all 11 South African languages. The bookshop is now located in the Barbican building, a heritage wonder in the City Centre (read more about it here). Shea founded the non-profit African Book Trust to support the work of Bridge Books, the lead partner in the Joburg Literary District project, an umbrella for more than 60 booksellers in the Joburg City Centre that radiate around the Johannesburg City Library. on Beyers Naude Square.

Bridge Books hosts book launches, poetry nights, themed festivals that deal with everything from queer literature to Afro-futurism, storytelling sessions, as well as the brilliant Underground Booksellers walking tour in the City Centre (booking essential).
