David Hockney is arguably one of Britain’s most popular contemporary artists. He started his art journey in the Bradford College of Art training under the likes of celebrated artist and art teacher Frank Lisle before going onto graduate from the Royal College of Art alongside contemporaries like Sir Peter Blake. Considered one of the forerunners of British Pop art, Hockney has held exhibitions in prestigious galleries and museums all around the globe that have attracts millions of visitors.
Directed by award-winning director Phil Grabsky, David Hockney: Royal Academy of Art traces Hockney’s career of over 40 years. Featuring intimate in-depth interviews with the artist himself, the documentary takes a look behind the façade of Hockney’s star power, focusing in particular on two major recent exhibitions Hockney held at the Royal Academy of Art in London; A Bigger Picture (2012) and 82 Portraits and One Still Life (2016). The monumentally-scaled works in A Bigger Picture hone in on the glorious landscapes of Hockney’s childhood home Yorkshire. Meanwhile 82 Portraits and One Still Life is an epic series of portraits that profiles the people from his everyday life in Hollywood including gallerists, friends, family, curators and one of Hockney’s all-time favourite subjects - model and fashion designer Celia Birtwell.
