Artist and sculptor Ed Young’s works are often highly provocative with an emphasis on conceptualism and subversion. One critic has said of Young that "if high school rules applied to the art world, [he] would be in permanent detention, and most likely wearing a smirk because of it".
Young works with found objects, text, sculpture and performance to create largely autobiographical art that is full of curiosity about the always evolving political climate. In this exhibition the focal piece is his 61cm tall scupture of a naked man, based on his own image, called 'COMME des FUCKDOWN', a work which has ellicted both disgust and delight from viewers.
The artist says of his creative process that “you don’t really decide this stuff and it comes as a package deal when it arrives in your head. The work seems a bit schizophrenic but I suppose that is ok too. And at least I don’t get too bored.”
