One of Joburg’s newest racing events, the Equinity Night Race seeks to reinvent every aspect of traditional racing, merging performance art, live music, and racing for a massive late-night party. The idea for the Equinity Night Race was born in 2013 when, as co-founder Angus Campbell explains, “we happened to be at the track one night and the energy under those massive spotlights was intense. The horses looked even more beautiful and powerful than usual”.

Just ahead of Halloween, the Equinity Night Race gets spooky held under the theme La Calavera (or The Elegant Skull) and inspired by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada’s 1910 La Calavera Catrina. Envisioned as a hedonistic celebration not unlike the Mexican Day of the Dead fiestas, expect zany performers and unusual artists in custom-made brightly coloured costumes. Another highlight of the night race is the chance to follow the race on cinema-like large screens, as opposed to the traditional race experience of glimpses as the horses fly by.
