A coffee shop, roastery and bakery tucked into a tiny corner of eastern Joburg's makers community Victoria Yards, the Foakes Coffee Bar and Roastery is a shrine to sourdough bread. Made daily by head baker Washington using a time-honed recipe that uses double fermentation for a lighter bread, options include the classic sourdough, whole wheat, 50 percent and 100 percent rye sourdough breads. Washington learnt his trade from a French baker and his bread creations often include whimsical “signatures”. Choose one of the day’s breads and a variety of fillings to create a sandwich or buy a loaf to take home. The Foakes coffee meanwhile is hand-roasted in small batches onsite with Foakes currently stocking five single origin options and two unique blends.
