Tucked into upmarket Hyde Park Corner, George’s Grill House is a contemporary steakhouse serving a unique combination of expertly prepared meat and tapas-style small plates.

This is restaurateur George Kutra’s third grill house, each having a distinctive look and feel. Kutra is the co-founder of the Mediterranean Mythos restaurant brand, and we love how he has blended the great South African steakhouse with his Greek heritage to create George’s Grill House.

Slide into a booth or take a table. If you like your meat – talking about it, selecting from the meat fridge, comparing wet-aged and dry-aged cuts – this is your place. If you have a sizeable appetite you’ll find yourself at home with the 600g sliced T-bone steak, a signature dish that has been wet-aged, and comes pepper-crusted or served with a mushroom and truffle sauce.

Aficionados will recognise the meat suppliers’ names, with Chalmar Beef supplying the premium wet-aged meat cuts and Angus Beef the dry-aged meat cuts. Wagyu, ribeye and tomahawk steaks are just some of the cuts available. No need to be an aficionado, though, as the friendly and knowledgeable staff are more than happy to share their knowledge and make useful recommendations.

The sauce menu will leave you comforted – from good old-fashioned South African monkey-gland (no monkeys or glands involved in the making of this sauce) to mature cheddar and a Madagascan green peppercorn.

George’s Grill House has its own in-house butchery, where once delivered, the meat is expertly aged.

While meat takes centre stage, there’s an ample cast of non-meat dishes. We loved the range of meze dishes that include rock shrimp tempura with spicy mayo, prawn spring rolls, classic grilled haloumi cheese, and tempura fried feta with peppered honey. For the non-meat eaters, the grilled sardines with pickled onions and salsa verde served with pita are a hit, or there’s a good-looking smashed falafel burger with tasty accompaniments that include tzatziki.

The seafood menu carries its Mediterranean influence with calamari, prawns, and salmon on offer. Add to that a small pasta menu with a prawn and calamari linguine we heard being highly recommended. There is even a selection of fresh and raw dishes that include sushi and sashimi. We didn’t sample George’s salmon roses, but would be tempted to return for a light lunch. It's also refreshing to see a salad menu that goes beyond the ordinary 'Greek' salad.

With a satisfying wine list and cocktails on the menu, this is a great choice if you are headed to Hyde Park Corner, a perfect pre-movie dinner, a place to relax before browsing the shelves of Exclusive Books, or doing some leisurely window shopping.

But the pièce de résistance is most certainly the famous chocolate mousse. Order it and you’ll see why. Light and delicious, and commanding its own member of staff to mix it up at your table, it’s a wonderful way to end a meal.
