Soweto Theatre presents Gone Native an inspiring piece of theatre that relates the story of Regina Brooks, a white woman who reached notoriety in 1950s apartheid South Africa when she asked to be reclassified as a so-called 'coloured' woman. Brooks was arrested under the former Immorality Act for living with a black man, Sergeant Richard Khumalo, and appealed to be classified as 'coloured' in order to be with her black partner and their daughter Thandi. Directed by award-winning director, playwright and actor Makhaola Ndebele and with jazz legend Hugh Masekela as musical director, the play focuses on Regina and Richard's love story, highlighting the power of love and youth in the fight against unjust government laws in a prejudiced society.
