Herb Land and Herb Land Cafe

Being one of the world’s biggest urban forests, Joburg holds a treasure trove of outdoor experiences. Some are easily accessible in the suburbs while others are a little way down the road less travelled. Herb Land is one such gem that’s not so much hidden as it is undiscovered.

You’ll find Herb Land along Summit Road in Bridle Park, Midrand. It’s a wonderland of herbs and flora where kids big and small are encouraged to run around, explore and even pick herbs and flowers from the gardens. It’s located on a sprawling property with rose gardens, water features, and multiple paths and mazes. Herb Land also has a fantastic café, kids' play centre and herb nursery.

Herb Café

Think crisp Belgian waffles with lashings of ice-cream, strawberries and chocolate, and farm-style pancakes with cinnamon-sugar and cream. This is a sweet-tooth sanctuary where you can have your cake and eat it in the garden, too. Belgian hot chocolates are served in fluorescently coloured, gorgeously kitsch teacups and the signature rose latte here is a winner for those looking to post on the 'gram.

Farm kitchen breakfasts of omelettes and poached eggs are served with homemade bread, and lunches take on more of an eclectic, Middle East meets Mediterranean feel. Herb Café also has a great selection of vegan options, including vegan waffles.

Portions are generous and so is the service, but this is not the kind of place you go to for a quick bite. The menu stipulates a minimum 35-minute waiting time, so be prepared to sit back, relax and enjoy the views. Booking is essential.

PlaYard

A world of kiddies' entertainment awaits at PlaYard. Photo: Kate Liquorish.

The kids will love the huge outdoor activity area with enormous jungle gyms, slides and swings, as well as sandpits, miniature houses and a vast range of other indoor and outdoor entertainment. There are private party pods that you can rent along with an entire barn for bigger events. PlaYard offers a simple menu of aptly named munchies, consisting of mainly burgers, wraps, ribs and all the naughty nibbles that will delight little ones.

Entrance is free for adults and costs R40 per child (aged one to 13 years old).

Herbal Centre

This is a herb-centric nursery burgeoning with edible greens along with a great selection of flowers and small shrubs. The staff are wonderfully enthusiastic – we were all given hugs on arrival – and they really aim to please. The Herbal Centre offers a sweet ‘Grow-in-a-Box’ service with herbs and veggies for you to pick and plant at home in their custom-made, wooden planters.

Overall, Herb Land is a great way to spend time outdoors in this busy city.
