Home of the Bean opened in 2019 as a tiny slice of a cafe in the courtyard of Maboneng's historic The Cosmopolitan building before moving to larger premises in Arts on Main on Maboneng's main street Fox in the winter of 2021.

Home of the Bean ups the city's style quotient considerably with its cool interior and statement furniture by local award-winning design duo Houtlander. And that's before you get to taste the coffee – highly recommended. The beans are sourced from different roasteries as far away as Burundi, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Guatemala. The carrot cake brownies are also noteworthy as are the delicious smoothies. 

Founded by husband and wife duo Leroy Kgopa and Itumeleng Manamela Home of the Bean is all about quality experience from the beans to the seats. The two share a love of coffee and also an unusual career path for coffee-preneurs, both working in public hospitals (at two different Joburg locations) where Kgopa is a diagnostic radiographer and Manamela a radiation therapist. The brand started as a mobile coffee shop and still also operates an uber-cool coffee kombi. 

We recommend this stopover on any Maboneng visit. Home of the Bean also has the distinction of being a casual office for some of the city's coolest creatives. For extra points don your best vintage clothing to complete what already beckons as a perfect photo location.
