Home of the Bean ups the city's style quotient considerably with its cool interior and statement furniture by local award-winning design duo Houtlander. And that's before you get to taste the coffee – highly recommended – and noteworthy carrot cake brownies. You'll also find smoothies on the menu.

Founded by husband and wife duo Leroy Kgopa and Itumeleng Manamela Home of the Bean is all about quality experience from the beans to the seats. The two share a love of coffee and also an unusual career path for coffee-preneurs, both working in public hospitals (at two different Joburg locations) where Kgopa is a diagnostic radiographer and Manamela a radiation therapist.

Home of the Bean is a tiny slice of a cafe in Maboneng's historic The Cosmopolitan, once a hotel. The coffee shop looks out on to the Cosmopolitan's sculpture garden and is steps away from one of our favourite bookstores, Bridge Books, which specialises in African literature. So a perfect combination. Home of the Bean also has the distinction of being a casual office for some of the city's coolest creatives.

The beans are sourced from different roasteries and as far away as Burundi, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Guatemala. The brand started as a mobile coffee shop and this is its first stationery coffee shop. Home of the Bean also operates an uber cool coffee kombi.

We recommend this stopover on any Maboneng visit. And for extra points don your best vintage clothing to complete what already beckons as a perfect photo location.
