In photos: The Happening in Melville

07 Mar 2024
This past weekend on Sat, Mar 2, The Happening took to the streets of Melville. First inspired by American performance artist Allan Kaprow’s 18 Happenings in 6 Parks, which took place in New York in 1959 as spontaneous performances in spaces like parks, galleries, and museums, these events encourage audience participation and bring neighbourhoods to life.

Hosted by a local non-profit The Happening, the event in Melville was inspired by the ethos of AfrikaBurn, a radically inclusive and accessible annual festival held in the Karoo. The Happening invited businesses, residents, and anyone interested to join the event to co-create in a space free from corporate influence or sponsorship.

The result was a day of self-expression, high colour, art, plenty of fun, and a coming together in the spirit of revival on the streets of Melville, a suburb hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic which resulted in many small businesses closing along what was once Joburg's most vibrant nightlife street.

Joburg Photowalkers Mark Straw and Zehavit Yaretzkey were there on the day to capture some of the colour and shared their pictures with us. Pure joy!
