Celebrating jacaranda season in Joburg

In 2019, we launched our first #JacarandaInYourPocket photo competition. We've run the competition each year, and for the past three years, alongside it, our annual jacaranda experiences. As we wrote in a guest column for Daily Maverick, it's our "month-long love letter to the city" – originally inspired by a trip to Tokyo, where the cherry blossoms are celebrated annually. We wanted to create a similar ritual in Joburg, encouraging moments where people in the city can pause to notice beauty. In 2025, we hosted a helicopter flip, a rooftop bloom-spotting tour, and jacaranda-themed runs through Rosebank, with more than 500 people joining in the festivities. Read the recap

But now, for the moment you've all been waiting for.

The photographs by the top 10 finalists for #JacarandaInYourPocket 2025 embody the season's beauty and instill a sense of pride in where we live. They also reflect Joburg's adventurous spirit. We were hard-pressed to choose just 10, and now give you the even more difficult decision: choosing the first prize winner and the four runners-up, who will each win their share of R40,000 in fantastic prizes.
