Joburg based artist, designer and publisher Jason Bronkhorst's exhibition Board of Directors is the culmination of three years of work and encompasses paintings, drawings and sculpture. Each work is a many-layered loose self-portrait that invites the viewer to question historical privilege, oppression and the costs borne by Africa of colonial influence and imperialism. A study of 'Trash Capitalism' the exhibition reflects on the connections between post colonialism, capitalism, patriarchy and white supremacy in contemporary South Africa.
An artist who is drawn to the tactile elements of the artistic process, Bronkhorst's paintings are created using all manner of materials including ink, charcoal, markers, watercolours, acrylics and spray paint, often applied with dowel rods or scraps of cardboard, while his sculptures are carved out of found materials using hand saws, bench drills and old tools.
