Kaolin Thomson Woods - Learning to Transgress
Saturday Feb 17 11:00–18:00
Cnr Joubert St and Kotze St, Braamfontein
Thomson Woods first rose to fame with her final-year art project The Vagina Ashtray, and for her Master’s degree presents a critique of the South African education system in Learning to Transgress.
Using the experiences of her three children and the daily activities both she as a lecturer and the children as students undergo, Thomson Woods challenges the relationship between contemporary issues such as colonisation, Christianity and capitalism and the South African education system. Visceral and direct, Learning to Transgress is a performative art event that seeks to disturb the audience out of complacency, challenging them to question the teaching practices and hierarchies present in modern-day education.
